About William Michael Rafter

I first came to New Mexico in 1986 on a multi-week expedition with Appalachian State University’s Anthropology program. We traveled slowly along the back roads, exploring many wondrous sites. It was our good fortune to visit the Hopi, Zuni, and Navajo reservations, and share in their stories and dances. I was enriched by the viewpoint of these indigenous peoples, their ancient belief systems inspired by the natural world, and the art that represented their history and their lives. It was a life-changing experience, and I became more and more enchanted by New Mexico.

Having grown up near an ocean, I expected to miss the water. I had no idea how the impact of the high desert and its tree-laden mountains would inspire me. The sky was unlike any other I had ever seen: an unlimited expanse of cerulean blue, populated with billowing, white clouds, and liquid fire sunsets. I slept under the stars and dreamed. The profound beauty encouraged silence; so I watched and listened, wrote and sketched, photographed and painted, knowing nothing except that I must return. Three years later I moved here, to Santa Fe. I obtained an apprenticeship with two nationally recognized jewelers, and the high desert became my outward home.

Wherever I walk in the desert or the aspen-filled mountains, I see form and texture, and the shapes and lines fuel my creative senses. Inspiration is everywhere. I spend days exploring the possibilities led by the weight and feel of the metals, and of precious stones.

To me, a piece of jewelry needs to feel like something unique and eternal, not just be beautiful to the eye. Some of my pieces are produced using the lost-wax casting process, but each piece is still unique. This is how it should be. I never know when the next inspiration will appear, or why, only that it is a continuous exploration for me, and one in which I hope you will join me.
